Joomla update

E-mail Print PDF

This website has been running Joomla 1.5 for a while now.  But, I think it's time I made the move to Joomla 2.5.  The page will get a new theme and all that.  Hopefully all of the content will stay intact though.  I haven't really investigated what makes 2.5 the latest and greatest, but I'm looking forward to it.

Goofing around with adsense again

E-mail Print PDF

Google keeps sending me vouchers for $100 of adsense/adwords publicity.  Now, my site gets literally less than a hundred unique visitors a month.  But it got me thinking, what would happen if I do use those adwords?  I'd get more visitors, but no one would ever come back.  Ha ha!  So, what to do?  I think if I really want to get more hits, I need to either make this blog more personal and interesting with stories and such, which my life is fairly devoid of, or I need to put up more guides and such that hit on niche topics.  Then again, I kind of like how it is now where I just regurgitate events that unfold to the internet friends we have.

Still, I'm curious again, so I've turned on some more adsense things and will probably turn more in in time to see how they work in the grand scheme of things.  Go grab adblock if you don't like them though.  :)

I seem to have lost a few posts.  Sadness...

This is probably due to the server move that happened this past weekend.  Site5, my webhost, was doing some server maintenance and moved this site from what I considered a somewhat slow server, to a significantly faster one.  We're talking 2 physical CPU server to a 16 core server.  Not too shabby.  There were problems though.  There was a DNS piece that didn't migrate properly until I pointed it out to them yesterday.  Looks like fixing that problem set me back and I lost about a weeks worth of data.  Ah well.  I'll repost them in time.  Luckily google cached the pages when they crawled my site.

A few weeks with adsense

E-mail Print PDF

So, I've had AdSense running for a few weeks now.  I've learned a couple things.

First, it is ridiculously easy to put AdSense to work for you.  Ridiculously easy.  All you really have to do is cut and paste Google supplied code.  Simple.

Second, it takes a lot of unique visitors to make any money with AdSense.  Lots.  I have literally made one penny since I've added the ads.  1 Penny.

Third, this website is mostly visited by our friends.  No surprise there, but it's a good thing to know.

So, my experiment with AdSense is now over.  The ads are off the front page and the simple clean blank spaces are back.  I'm going to leave the small ones at the end of each blog post just in case something I post gets popular.  That's happened once before when I posted my camera strap story.
