A gift, a project, and a marathon

E-mail Print PDF

A birthday / christmas gift arrives.  But it comes with strings attached.

Harold decided to send me a birthday / Christmas gift.  It being the holidays and all, there are a lot of boxes left at our door.  It was pretty apparent though where this box came from.  "Awesomely bodacious body snatchers".

Inside was a shiny new harddrive.  A gift any geek could love.  This one just happens to be crazy big.  I can go into a long rant about how back in the day I spent $350 on a 9GB LVD SCSI drive, and how the cable for that drive cost me another $50.  Anyway...

Earlier in the year, Mark asked Eliza and I to run the Chicago Half Marathon.  I was really undecided about running, though Eliza was quite up beat about it.  I decided that on my birthday I would decide to run or not.  During Harry's last visit to Chicago I told him of my sheepish plans.

On our way back to his hotel after dinner.

Harry:  "I'll buy you a 1TB harddrive if you run it."

"Are you serious?"

"Yeah, if you run that marathon I'll buy you a harddrive."

Eliza:  "If I knew it was that easy, I would have bought you that a long time ago!"

So, I'm going to run one.  The drive and the race may have changed, but the premise is the same.  To keep this drive I must run in a half or full marathon in 2009.  The marathon has been chosen.  The Las Vegas HALF Marathon.  It is held every year in December.  I haven't registered for it yet.  So far it looks like Eliza, myself, and my brother are going to run it.  Exciting!  I can't wait to run down the Las Vegas strip at the crack of dawn.  Sun rising on the horizon, two fingers on my neck to check my pulse, ipod blasting erasure into my drums...  I think a victory brunch at the wynn buffet will need to follow soon after.

Mark's not too happy with me.  The marathon directly conflicts with deer season.  But come on, 8 hours sitting in a deer stand twenty feet up in the air, or running with other marathoners with thoughts of pocket rockets and doubling down a 5 n 6.

Anyone else interested in going?

As for the harddrive, it's currently getting it's guts filled with movies as my HTPC project gets the storage boost it's needed.
